Tips for
Applying for Jobs Online
- If at
all possible, don’t post a “Confidential” resume. You need to
be easily tracked down.
- Read the
job advertisement or posting for key words.
- Tailor
your resume for the particular position. Make minor
adjustments (without embellishing, of course) including key
words matching the job description to your resume. This will
help make your resume match and stand out.
- Be
flexible on titles. They generally have little meaning.
Functions are more important.
-
Understand the software the on-line posting site is using.
Follow directions and don’t deviate. If it asks for text or
ASCII, then post using exactly what and how they tell you.
- Keep
organized and develop a system and process for applying to
both job-boards and companies directly. Know where your
resume is going and when it went there.
What
should you do differently?
- Be
proactive and aggressive in your job search. Call the company
or contact to follow up after you submit your resume.
- If you
are including your resume as an attachment, be sure the file
name includes your name.
- If you
are sending a resume via email, have a small introduction that
describes how you fit the position you are applying for.
-
Reference the job you are applying for by name or code in the
subject line of the email.
What are the common
mistakes??
- Use a
good, professional chronological format on your resume. Do not
do anything unusual or out of the ordinary. Graphs, pictures
or personal web site urls should not be listed.
- Apply
more than once and for different positions.
- Don’t
forget dates. Leaving out dates is a red flag. You can’t
hide this information.
-
Use a chronological format, starting with your education and
most recent position. Don’t use an “Objective;” that limits
your chances. If there are employment gaps, explain this in
your resume.
